THE COMMUNITY SERVICE DEPARTMENT

Purpose

The Community Service Department (Formerly known as the
Dorcas Society) is an important department of the Seventh Day
Adventist church, which provides “in-reach” to the local
congregation, and “outreach” to the community at large. The
Community Service Department typically enlists the
participation of every church member in order to provide
clothing, food, and other supplies to families in need, as well as
organize group visits to nursing facilities, hospitals and member
shut-ins. However, serving the community involves much more
than merely giving material assistance or tangible goods; it also
involves sacrificing our time, talents and tokens to those in need
of God’s love!

For more info regarding the functions of this and other church
departments see the Seventh Day Adventist Church Manual,
Chapter 9, Page 94.

•        Why should you get involved in Community Service?

Throughout scripture we are admonished to feed the hungry, to
clothe the naked, to care for the sick and to visit those in prison
(Matt 25:34-40). Therefore, the conviction of Jesus should
propel us to service, when he said “The Spirit of the Lord is
upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to
the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach
deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty them that are bruised. To preach the acceptable
year of our Lord”  Luke 4:18.
